9/13/2023 0 Comments Invisible monsters a novelThough other authors might not be able to it pull off, Palahniuk does it beautifully – he’s a man fully at home with structured chaos. We’re reminded of VOGUE, with article interrupted by advertisement after advertisement and constant jumps from one story to the next. “Don’t expect this to be the kind of story that goes: and then, and then, and then.” Actually, as Palahniuk himself points out, the novel runs more like a fashion magazine. It’s also worth mentioning that the second chapter starts with a warning. I finished the book in half a day, not even taking breaks for meals. The ensuing chain of events will keep you guessing, and so enthralled you won’t be able to stop turning the pages. Hold your breath – you’ll be thrust into wild action that’ll put you on edge from the start. Palahniuk makes sure that readers will understand what they are in for from the very first page. Depressed by her post-accident disability, she finds solace in the company of Brandy Alexander, a pre-op transsexual who teaches her about redemption, recovery, rebirth, rescue and the very unlikely forms they may take. The plot of Invisible Monsters revolves around a fashion model crippled by a horrific accident that leaves her horribly disfigured and unable to speak. If there’s one thing Palahniuk seems to have a knack for, it’s writing beautifully perturbing stories. Well, that was until I considered that 35 people are said to have fainted at a reading of one of his short stories, titled Guts. Upon reading the aforementioned trivia snippet, it was hard for me to imagine how much more unsettling than Fight Club Palahniuk’s first book could have possibly been. Once that happened, the publishers grew some balls and put a revised edition of Invisible Monsters into print. Though the novel didn’t do well initially, the success of the movie adaptation gained Palahniuk a large and loyal fan base. To his surprise, the publishers loved Fight Club and published it almost immediately. In retaliation, Palahniuk sat down and wrote Fight Club in an effort to come up with something even more disturbing. In his biography, Palahniuk let slip that Invisible Monsters was supposed to be his first published novel but publishers backed out on the grounds that it was too disturbing. Invisible Monsters was published in 1999 by the well-known author of Fight Club and Choke, both of which have been adapted for film. There’s only one book that has it all from practically the first page – and that’s Chuck Palahniuk’s ‘Invisible Monsters’. “I hate how I don’t feel real enough unless people are watching.Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk was written after Fight Club and reads more like a fashion magazine than a novel. And if you want to experience for yourself, you can get a copy of Invisible Monsters through this hyperlink ! In my opinion, it was a genius idea because it plays with our minds and it makes us want to come back for more. The finest approach to keep crucial information out of the view, hidden. You will be disconcerted and that is exactly what he wanted to do. As I mentioned before, there’s no clear continuous storytelling in this novel. Questions were filling my mind: Who am I? Who is who? Who did what? And it all made sense in the end. Thoughout the book, I was disturbed, confused and also excited. “The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open.” They all come to the conclusion of doing an ultimatum to reborn, to become someone else. One by one, each character is as weird and unique as the other but they all have one thing in common: identity crisis. Using plastic surgery as the whole book’s concept, Chuck dissects the ugliest part of an individual’s identity. This book is a real masterwork, from it’s original magazine structure, bouncing the lines all over the place to a deep critic of the society’s norms for beauty. I’m a huge fan of his writing and PARTICULARLY his plot twisting. After reading it, I have to admit : this book is my favourite from Chuck Palahniuk. It follows her journey of being an invisible monster, so hideous that everyone prefers to ignore her existence. The story is about a model who knew fame and glory until she’s been disfigured during a tragic accident. I heard a lot about this book, especially as the one that Palahniuk’s editor didn’t want to publish because they find it too disturbing.
